Three Tips for Better Home Security This Winter

Unfortunately, when the nights get longer, this time of year can be open season for burglars looking to target your home. Now is the perfect time to review your home security and see what improvements you can make.

Here are three tips to improve your home’s security.

The simplest measures are the best

Some of the most effective security precautions are simple and cost very little – apart from a bit of thought and effort. Make sure door and window locks are in good working order. Upgrade them if necessary. Don’t overlook garages, sheds and outbuildings, as thieves often see these as easy pickings.

Don’t leave valuables such as phones, laptops, car keys, wallets and handbags on display. When Christmas comes around, don’t store valuable presents in an obvious place or put them under the tree too early.

Be careful what you post on social media. For example, don’t mention that you will be out that evening or are off on a winter holiday. Would-be burglars could be keeping tabs on your movements.

Upgrade your lighting

Good lighting is another security measure that is simple and cheap to do. Criminals are less likely to target a home that looks occupied or well-lit.

Consider if you need better or additional outdoor lighting. Make sure your home is always lit in the evenings, even when you’re not at home. Although smart home security systems can do this (see next), it can be as simple as adding inexpensive plug-in timers to a few lights around the house.

Fit or upgrade a security system

Autumn is a perfect time to install a security alarm system to deter and detect intruders. A simple, old-school DIY-fitted home alarm can cost less than £100.

Consider installing a smart home security system if you have a bigger budget. These can monitor your home with sensors and/or cameras, perhaps incorporating a video doorbell. They can turn on lights and other appliances like TVs in the evening. They can even open and close curtains and blinds when you’re not at home.

They can alert you and/or a security response service if intruders are detected. Smart home security systems can link up with virtual assistants like Alexa and Siri and can be controlled and monitored using a phone app whenever you’re away from home.
